An open letter to leaders participating at WEF 2024 meet in Davos

Dear Delegates,

In the not-so-distant future, our world could be home to a staggering 10 billion people, each competing for energy in a system stretched to its limits. This sobering projection, outlined in a 2023 International Energy Agency report, warns of a 47% increase in global energy demand by 2050, driven by economic growth outside the OECD and a population explosion, especially in Asia. With our global population already exceeding 8 billion and fossil fuel emissions reaching record highs, the urgency of transformative action has never been more palpable.

Introduction:
Davos 2024 brings a rousing rallying cry – “From the laboratory to life.” Incremental change is no longer enough; it takes bold breakthroughs to bridge the gap between brilliant ideas and real-world impact. The goal is to bring innovation from laboratories to living rooms with a vision of a future where 10 billion people will prosper in a sustainable way. It is not just a crisis, but an opportunity for common progress, a chance to rewrite history and reshape our common destiny.

Urgency and Opportunity:
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) amplifies this urgency and emphasizes the need for rapid and deep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to avoid irreversible climate damage. Decoupling economic growth from energy consumption is becoming the key to unlocking a future where people and planet thrive. Success stories such as Costa Rica’s remarkable feat of growing GDP while reducing its carbon footprint highlight that sustainability is not only ethical but also a sound business strategy.

Global Collaboration for Sustainability:
Scaling these successes globally requires unleashing the power of innovation and collaboration. Breakthroughs in renewable energy, energy storage, resource efficiency, smarter infrastructure, and sustainable transport systems are essential. The question shifts from “can we decouple economic growth from energy consumption?” to “how?” – a question that will define the 21st century. By embracing innovation, fostering collaboration, and prioritizing sustainability, we can pave the way for a future where economies thrive within the boundaries of a healthy planet.

Manufacturing at a Crossroads:
The backbone of our modern world, manufacturing, is at a critical crossroads. The “materials access challenge” requires securing resources without destroying the environment. Enter the “Global Collaboration Village” – a virtual reality (VR)-powered vision that breaks down geographic barriers and accelerates the development of cleaner manufacturing processes. VR is becoming a tool that democratizes access to expertise and rewrites the energy equation for a future where manufacturing thrives in harmony with the planet.

Equitable Transition Alliance:
The promise of clean energy is enticing, but the transition must be fair. The Equitable Transition Alliance aligns with the Davos 2024 meeting on “Building Equitable Transitions.” This alliance ensures a fair and inclusive energy transition, advocating for targeted skills training, tailored energy subsidies, and community-led renewable energy projects. It strives to create a future where everyone benefits from the clean energy revolution.

Addressing Plastic Pollution:
Our planet is drowning in plastic, but the 2022 Global Plastics Agreement offers hope. Prioritizing bold measures – banning single-use plastics, holding producers accountable, and investing in waste management infrastructure – can stem the tide of pollution. This moment calls for decisive action to protect our planet for future generations.

Conclusion:
Dear leaders and delegates, Davos 2024 stands at a crossroads. Lofty promises are no longer enough; bold action is required. It is a call for commitment to ambitious energy efficiency targets, renewable energy sources, and just transition plans. Let Davos be a springboard for collective action, not just a stage for declarations. Imagine a world powered by clean energy and shared prosperity. With every commitment, investment, and action, we move closer to this brighter future. Let Davos be the spark that ignites our common journey towards a sustainable world where clean energy and hope prevail.

So, it is time to act, collectively.

Thank you and I wish you a fruitful day at the WEF 2024 annual meeting at Davos.
