IPL Points Table (Updated) on May 4: In what proved to be a really fascinating and exciting game, Kolkata Knight Riders under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer defeated fierce rivals Mumbai Indians in the 51st game of the Tata Indian Premier League 2024. Despite suffering a batting collapse, Kolkata Knight Riders managed to hold on till the end and their superb bowling efforts helped them defeat the joint most successful team of IPL by 24 runs. This was a really special win for the Knight Riders as they defeated the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede for the first time since IPL 2012.

Having being asked to bat first by MI skipper Hardik Pandya, the Shreyas Iyer led team were anticipated to start things off in their usual aggressive fashion thanks to the incredible form of the opening duo of Phil Salt (5 runs in 3 balls) and Sunil Narine (8 runs in 8 balls) but things didn’t go according to plan for the visitors as Salt and Narine got dismissed early on in the powerplay, courtesy of some really good display of hard length deliveries and swing bowling from Nuwan Thushara (3-42) and Hardik Pandya (2-44). Angkrish Raghuvanshi showed some retaliation with his quickfire knock of 13 runs in six balls but he too fell prey to the outstanding bowling of Thushara.

Shreyas Iyer walked out to bat at number four and KKR fans were hoping that he would stabilize things for them but the brilliance of Nuwan Thushara sent him back to the pavilion as well. Venkatesh Iyer (70 runs in 52 balls) kept control of one end and post the dismissal of Iyer, Rinku came to bat at number five as the Kolkata based team were struggling at 43-4 in 4.2 overs. But immediately after the end of the powerplay, Rinku too got caught and bowled by the brilliance of Piyu Chawla and Singh had to go back for just nine runs.

The fans were losing hopes as the visitors were struggling at 60-5 in seven overs but the Kolkata management took the decision of introducing Manish Pandey as the impact substitute and his innings of 42 runs in 31 deliveries helped to stabilize the sinking ship of the two winners alongside Venky Iyer.

Iyer batted at a decent strike rate and his partnership with Manish for the sixth wicket helped the Knight Riders maintain a steady run rate but Hardik Pandya broke their partnership by dismissing Pandey in the 17th over.

Andre Russell walked in to bat in the 17 over with the hopes of applying the finishing touches and even hit a maximum on his first ball off the bowling of Pandya but an unnecessary runout with Venkatesh Iyer proved to be the final blow to the Kolkata based team. Jasprit Bumrah (3-18) who had two overs left for the death overs finished things off for the Shreyas Iyer led team as they got all out for 169 runs, a total which looked at least 30 runs short, despite the pitch providing a lot of assistance to the batters.

The Hardik Pandya led team looked pretty confident to chase down the total of 170 runs with ease and the duo of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan started things off slowly but Mitchell Starc’s brilliance sent Ishan back to the dugout with a peach of a delivery. Naman Dhir came to bat at number three and played a quick cameo of 11 runs but Varun Chakaravarthy cleaned him up on the first ball of the fourth over. Things started to look difficult for the home team after suffering two dismissals in the powerplay and the Mumbai crowd was hoping that they would get to witness a Rohit special today but to their disappointment, Sunil Narine, just like he always does, got the better of Rohit on the last ball of the sixth over.

Tilak Verma had a rare off day as well and his dismissal made things even more difficult for Mumbai. Surya Kumar Yadav took command of one end and absorbed majority of the pressure but Hardik Pandya on the other end got dismissed as well. Tim David built a short partnership with SKY and allowed the world’s number one T20i batter to shift gears as he completed his third fifty of the season as well. SKY and David brought Mumbai back in the game but Surya’s dismissal changed the momentum and David with his cameo of 24 runs wasn’t able to help MI get over the line and eventually they lost the game by 24 runs.
