Mary Berry’s chocolate mousse is ‘perfect’ for dessert – 4 ingredients

When that after-dinner craving for something sweet hits, anything with chocolate is an absolute winner.

And there’s one chocolatey dessert that everyone in the family is guaranteed to love – chocolate mousse.

This classic treat is the perfect blend of light yet decadent flavours, and while it’s easy enough to go and grab a few tubs from the shops, did you know it’s also ultra-simple to make at home?

The queen of baking, Mary Berry, says you need just four ingredients to whip up a delicious chocolate mousse, resulting in a dessert that’s ideal for the whole family.

She shared the recipe for her ‘wicked’ chocolate mousse on her website, with the optional addition of brandy to make it even more indulgent.

Hailing the fuss-free recipe, she said: “Plain and simple chocolate mousse – no frills.

“A good pudding to serve if you have all ages coming for lunch. It can be made in glasses or ramekins.”

The beauty of chocolate mousse is that it doesn’t need to be served with anything – it always hits the spot on its own.

However, if you do want to jazz it up, you can add fruit or an extra layer of chocolate on the top.

Here’s everything you need to make this recipe, which serves six to eight.

Mary Berry’s chocolate mousse

Ingredients

  • 225g plain chocolate such as Bournville, broken into small pieces
  • Knob of butter
  • One tbsp brandy (optional)
  • Three large eggs, separated
  • 150ml double cream, lightly whipped

Method

Measure the chocolate into a bowl and sit it over a pan of simmering water. Melt slowly and do not allow the chocolate to become too hot.

Stir in the butter, brandy and egg yolks one at a time and mix until combined. Set aside to cool a little.

Whip the egg whites until just stiff. Fold into the chocolate mixture with the whipped cream, and then fold everything together until nicely combined.

Spoon into a glass bowl or six stemmed glasses or ramekins. Transfer to the fridge to set for at least a couple of hours.

Once they’ve been taken out, give them a light dust with icing sugar, and enjoy.
